Frequently asked questions about 6th Grade Band
When is the band rehearsal?
Full band rehearsals are held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday during the 7th (ACE) period in the band room at Glen Crest Middle School. The first meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. Students will not need their instruments during this meeting. The first full band practice will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
When are sectionals?
Groups of like instruments meet once a week on a rotating schedule. Group size, on average, is larger than last year’s beginning band lesson groups. The schedule is very flexible, so there are minimal conflicts with tests, quizzes, or important lessons in other classes. The sectional schedule will be finalized during the first week of rehearsal.
What is a rotating schedule?
A rotating schedule is used for band and orchestra sectionals so that the students do not miss the same class every week. For example, if Susie Smith has her clarinet sectional on Wednesday, first period on Sep 6, then she will have her next clarinet sectional on Wednesday, second period on September 4. Once again, this schedule is very flexible. If Susie the clarinet player has a conflict with a test, quiz, or important lesson, she should tell Mr. Garbar as soon as possible so that he could work with her on rescheduling for a better time for that day.
What is the band uniform?
The uniform is the same as it was in the beginning band. The students should wear black pants/skirt, a white dress shirt or blouse, and black shoes. All black clothing is also acceptable. However, all students in musical groups purchase a “Music Department T-shirt,” which is worn at band assemblies. A t-shirt order form will be sent home in September with more information.
What method book is used?
The 6th-grade concert band uses Essential Elements Book 2. The students can purchase this book from Mr. Garbar or Mrs. Berry at the first band rehearsal for $13 (percussion $18). Please make the check payable to CCSD89. Cash will be accepted as well. The student must have the book by September 30, 2024.
