Student Board Member program

  • In 2019, Community Consolidated School District 89 became one of the first K-8 school districts to start a Student Board Member program. The program is designed to give students a greater voice in the district’s vision and planning.

Ashley Krebs and Emily Puchalski were chosen as the district’s first Student Representatives to the Board of Education.

The 2024-25 Student Board Members are: Emma Waldbusser and Brooke Wills.Emma Waldbusser and Brooke Wills

The Student Board Members represent their classmates at the monthly Board of Education meetings. While the Student Board Members do not vote, they provide important insights into life as a student in CCSD 89. They discuss their school experiences, including what motivates them, the challenges they face, and the successes they’ve achieved.

"I'm so proud of the emphasis this district places on the importance of student voices,” Eccarius said. “I believe all students in the district benefit from the work of the student board members."

Students are eligible to apply to serve in their eighth-grade year. Applications are typically available from the Glen Crest main office in April. More information about the expectations for this position are included in the application.

All applicants are then interviewed and two students are selected as Student Representatives to the Board of Education. Student Board Members are expected to attend the once-a-month Board meetings, which start at 7 p.m. To learn more about the Board of Education, go to: www.ccsd89.org/board
