Student Board Member program
In 2019, Community Consolidated School District 89 became one of the first K-8 school districts to start a Student Board Member program. The program is designed to give students a greater voice in the district’s vision and planning.
Ashley Krebs and Emily Puchalski were chosen as the district’s first Student Representatives to the Board of Education.
The 2022-23 Student Board Members are: Kate Costello and Fatimah Shahid.
The Student Board Members represent their classmates at the monthly Board of Education meetings. While the Student Board Members do not vote, they provide important insights on life as a student in CCSD 89. They will discuss their school experiences, including what motivates them, the challenges they face, and the successes they’ve achieved.
“Students are the most important people in our district,” said CCSD 89 Superintendent Dr. Emily K. Tammaru. “We are thrilled to have these future leaders sitting beside us as we make decisions that will affect nearly 2,300 young learners.”
Students are eligible to apply to serve in their eighth-grade year. Applications are typically available from the Glen Crest main office in April. More information about the expectations for this position are included in the application.
All applicants are then interviewed and two students are selected as Student Representatives to the Board of Education. Student Board Members are expected to attend the once-a-month Board meetings, which start at 7 p.m. To learn more about the Board of Education, go to: www.ccsd89.org/board
Many of the applicants who are not chosen for the Student Board position go on to serve in other leadership positions at Glen Crest.
