Laura Guzman and Laurie Witort

Two Community Consolidated School District 89 employees earned the “89 Empowers Award” for their generous and extraordinary under-the-radar work that makes the district an outstanding place to learn.

Glen Crest Middle School French and literacy teacher Laura Guzman was named the 89 Empowers recipient for certified staff. Briar Glen aide Laurie Witort was named the 89 Empowers recipient for support staff.

The 89 Empowers Award honors those who embody the district’s mission to empower students, staff, and families to reach their full potential. All district employees are eligible to be nominated.

Glen Crest literacy/French teacher Laura Guzman

This is Guzman's 35th and final year in CCSD 89.

Guzman could have coasted into her final year – or at least slowed down a bit. She wouldn’t dream of it because she cares deeply about the success of each student. This year, she threw herself into working on the new literacy curriculum with the energy and enthusiasm of a new teacher.

“She always jumps on a new idea, tries strategies with consistency, and will give honest feedback,” one co-worker said. “She's a dream employee to work with for always putting those around her first, regardless of the amount of time or energy it takes.”

Laura Guzman and Laurie Witort

Guzman's French classes are filled with joy and discovery. She finds new ways for kids to engage with the French language, including children’s books and music videos. She has inspired more than a few students to plan future trips to Paris.

Guzman is also known for her exceptional kindness to students and the Glen Crest staff.

“She consistently goes above and beyond -- whether by supporting colleagues with empathy and insight, or by creating a learning environment where every student feels seen and is encouraged to reach their full potential," another Glen Crest teacher shared. "Of course, Laura does not seek recognition, but she undoubtedly deserves it.”

Briar Glen aide Laurie Witort

Laurie Witort has been working in District 89 since 2000. She’s currently an RTI instructional assistant at Briar Glen Elementary School.

“She exemplifies the true meaning of empowerment,” one co-worker wrote. “She meets each day with a smile, ready to face any challenge with grace and determination.”

Staff at Briar Glen said Witort has a natural ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students because she is loving, helpful, and student-focused.

“She sees the potential in every learner and patiently works alongside them, providing personalized support that helps them grow academically and emotionally,” a co-worker said. “Her kind and encouraging presence helps students believe in themselves, even when they are struggling. Because of Laurie, countless students have found the confidence to keep trying and to never give up.”

Witort's teammates have noticed that the kids enjoy their time with her because she has high expectations and makes the most of every minute she has with a child or a group of learners.

Yet another co-worker said: “Laurie always sees the best in others and brings a positive can-do attitude wherever she is! Laurie deserves to be recognized for all of the hard work and dedication she puts into making each day the best for herself and everyone she interacts with.”
