Various news reports have indicated that the federal government could pause or shut off the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) on November 1.
If SNAP benefits are impacted on November 1, Community Consolidated School District 89 students will continue to receive school lunches through the free-and-reduced lunch program. There is nothing families need to do to continue this service.
The free-and-reduced lunch program provides lunches to students in all five CCSD 89 schools based on income requirements. Free-and-reduced lunch is not connected to SNAP benefits. The district does not anticipate any changes to the free-and-reduced program.
The district is committed to ensuring that students get a nutritious lunch at school so they are prepared to participate in their classroom learning activities. With nearly one-quarter of CCSD 89 students from low-income homes, any interruption in SNAP resources may cause other nutritional disruptions outside the school day. The district is providing information about several organizations or programs where families can get help or provide support to others.
