Penny Wars

All CCSD 89 students will be able to compete against classmates in the annual ‘Penny Wars’ fundraiser after spring break. For one week, there will be jars in each school to collect donations.

The district’s two Student Board Members, Olivia Loftsgaarden and Skylar Usalis, have organized the fundraising competition. This is the fifth year that student board members have organized Penny Wars. Based on votes by students, all funds raised this year will go to Phil’s Friends, an organization that creates care packages for people going through cancer treatment.

How “Penny Wars” works

For one week, there will be three jars in each school to collect donations. When a student puts silver coins or dollars in their team’s jar, their team earns points. When a student puts pennies in another team’s jar, that team loses points.

At the elementary schools, the groups will be: preschool/kindergarten/fifth grade vs. second/third grade vs. first/fifth grade.

The competition will end on Friday. The grade level(s) with the most points at each school will earn a popsicle party.
