On Monday, the Community Consolidated School District 89 Board of Education unanimously approved a strategic plan that will guide the district’s work for the next five years.
The plan was developed over eight months with input from students, staff members, families, and community members.

The work to build the strategic plan began with a survey of five groups that have a significant influence on the district’s work: students, staff members, families, Board members, and community members.
Those survey results were provided to a focus group of 55 students, staff members, families, and residents who met five times over three months to dive deeper into the community feedback and write the plan’s goals.
Now that the Board has approved the big-picture strategic plan, staff members will begin to develop the specific strategies and indicators of success that will be used to implement the plan.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the work that so many people did to build this plan – especially the students who served on our committee,” said CCSD 89 superintendent Doug Eccarius. “The feedback from our students, staff, families, and community will be the foundation that ensures our schools continue to prepare students for every opportunity the future holds.”
About the plan
The plan centers around the district’s mission statement: CCSD 89 is a community where every learner belongs and is empowered to discover their full potential.
The focus group used that mission statement to develop goals that all stakeholders will have a role in implementing. The district’s vision is: “Our students will be learners who are capable, confident, empathetic, and resilient. As a community, we support our vision for students when we: develop critical thinking and collaboration; model responsibility and accountability; foster empathy and confidence; embrace the strengths of our diverse community; and provide quality resources.”
Using those mission and vision statements, the committee members built 22 goals across five areas: student success, finance/facilities, innovation, social-emotional learning, and beyond the classroom.
Four students who were part of the strategic plan committee presented the proposed plan to the Board at the May meeting: Arbor View fifth grader Ja'Mya Daniels, Westfield fifth grader Kaycee Sorce, Glen Crest seventh graders Owen Cruz and Lauren Sobecki. The strategic plan goals will now be distributed to staff across the district. Staff members will use the big-picture goals to develop specific action plans to reach the targets and criteria to annually measure whether goals have been met.
The strategic plan is designed to guide the district’s work through 2031. The district will revisit the plan during that time to provide updates to strategies and/or measures of success.
The previous strategic plan expired in 2026.
