“Matilda” is based on the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl. The play follows a young girl with the power of telekinesis as she navigates a new school and uncovers mysteries about her family. Matilda must join with her classmates to teach cruel grown-ups some lessons about kindness.
“It will leave you with a smile on your face,” Schmidt said. “It’s a title that people recognize and the songs are so fun and catchy.”
This is the third year in a row Glen Crest has put on a musical. This year’s eighth-grade students are the first Glen Crest group that has been able to be in a musical each year of middle school. The mix of very experienced veterans and motivated newcomers has made for a strong cast, Schmidt said.
“As a choreographer, I love to challenge kids. Each time we’ve added a dance, I give them an easier or a more difficult option,” she said. “They’ve always chosen the harder choice and they are exceeding expectations. We’ve had a blast.”
In March, the cast will be traveling to the elementary schools to give short performances at all four schools.
