Glen Crest runners earn individual, team conference championships
Glen Crest Middle School had a successful day at the DuPage Metro Valley Association cross country conference meet with one team champion and two individual winners.
Mia Siguenza was conference champion in the eighth-grade girls race. The eighth-grade boys won the team title, led by conference champion Evan Rubinas.
Rubinas won the two-mile race in 11:32, beating the second-place finisher by 29 seconds. He led a dominant performance by the Spartans; the team’s fifth runner crossed the finish line before any other team’s second runner. For the Spartans, Rubinas was followed by Patrick O’Reilly in third, Andrew Walter in fourth, Nicholas Crawford in sixth, Daniel Alcala in eighth, Ali Hamied in ninth, and Benjamin Machaj in 19th.
Glen Crest cross country coach Michelle Bolker said that although the boys lost one of their top runners to injury early in the year, the team never lost focus and continued to work hard.
“They blend together really well,” she said. “They’re all very supportive; it was really about supporting everybody’s successes.”
Siguenza won the eighth grade girls two-mile race in 12:09, finishing 38 seconds ahead of the next runner. It was Siguenza’s first year running cross country. Her time would have placed her third in the boys eighth-grade race.
“These runners were incredibly hard-working and they showed that hard work pays off,” Bolker said.
Glen Crest teams were coached by Bolker, Mark Odell, and Danny Sheridan. The conference meet was held on October 4.
