CCSD 89 Board will begin search for next superintendent

The Community Consolidated School District 89 Board of Education will begin the process of searching for the district’s next superintendent.

On Thursday evening, CCSD 89 Superintendent Dr. Emily Tammaru was selected as superintendent for Northbrook/Glenview School District 30. Tammaru will begin her role with District 30 on July 1, 2023.

After starting her career in West Aurora School District 129, Tammaru joined CCSD 89 in 2007 as the principal of Briar Glen Elementary School. Three years later, she was named the CCSD 89 Assistant Superintendent for Learning. She was selected as CCSD 89 superintendent in July 2016.

“Dr. Tammaru has been a wonderful asset to this district from the moment she joined,” said CCSD 89 Board of Education President Haydee Núñez. “Every single CCSD 89 student has benefited from her work. Dr. Tammaru guided the district through some tremendous challenges without ever losing sight of the goals of safety, academic excellence, and inclusion. Her work has put District 89 on a path for continued long-term success. The members of the Board of Education thank her for her strong, student-first leadership.”

As superintendent, Tammaru led the district’s curriculum and instruction improvements, planned responsible budgets that supported learning, and guided the district through boundary changes and pandemic learning. She had a key role in the School Time Committee, which introduced full-day kindergarten to CCSD 89 and added 30 minutes to the elementary school day. She helped expand learning opportunities in gifted education, English-language-learner programs, as well as math and science curriculum.

Under her leadership, the district twice worked with community members, staff, and students to revise the strategic plan that guides the district's work. Tammaru created a Student Board Member program to increase student voice, brought in family-engagement liaisons and instructional coaches at all five schools, expanded mental-health resources, and added an afterschool tutoring program for students who need additional support.

“I’m so appreciative of all the students, staff, and families who have made CCSD 89 such a special place over the last 16 years,” Tammaru said. “I’m very confident our fantastic team and thoughtful board will ensure a seamless transition for the next leader. I will be ready to provide any support I can to the next superintendent.”

The Board of Education will meet in the next few weeks to begin the process of hiring the next superintendent. Notices of Board meetings will be posted on the district’s website and shared with CCSD 89 families via newsletters. The district will continue to communicate with families about the transition.
