Students’ artistic, musical talents will be showcased at May events
The month of May will be filled with art and music as Community Consolidated School District 89 students share their talent and hard work with the community. All the events are free.
May 2: Art show and middle school chorus concert at Glen Crest
The events start on Thursday, May 2, with the CCSD 89 art show and middle school chorus concert at Glen Crest Middle School, 725 Sheehan Avenue.
The art show will open at 6 p.m. in Spartan Hall (the cafeteria) at Glen Crest. Spartan Hall will be filled with about 150 works of art created by students from each grade level at all five CCSD 89 schools. The artwork includes animations, paintings, drawings, collages, ceramics, sculptures, 3D printed work, photography, and digitally designed work. The pieces were chosen based on their craftsmanship, creativity, originality, and exceeding the project expectations.
Then, at 7 p.m., the Glen Crest boys and girls chorus will perform in the Glen Crest gym. The concert will include performances by the boys chorus, the sixth-grade girls chorus, and the 7th/8th grade girls chorus. The program will conclude with an all-chorus performance of “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay accompanied by members of the chamber orchestra.
May 7: Elementary chorus concert at Glen Crest
Students from all four elementary schools will participate in a combined chorus concert in the gym at Glen Crest Middle School on Tuesday, May 7. The concert will start at 7 p.m. Students should arrive at 6:15 p.m. to practice. The doors will open at 6:50 p.m.
May 9: Orchestra concerts at Glenbard South
Fifth-grade prelude orchestra and sixth-grade intermediate orchestra students will perform at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, in the auditorium at Glenbard South High School, 23W200 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn. They will perform “First Scale March”, “Fantasy on a Japanese Folk Song”, and a mystery piece to which only the orchestra teachers know the title!
At 7:30 p.m., the fourth-grade primo orchestra, Glen Crest Chamber Orchestra and the 7th/8th grade orchestra will also perform in the auditorium at Glenbard South High School. Songs to be performed are “Cloudgazing”, “Overture to the Barber of Seville”, “Pictures at an Exhibition”, “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss”, and “Carillon”. The orchestra teachers will also be recognizing the eighth grade students at the concert. The orchestra teachers will hand out the Orchestra Award - the school’s highest recognition - to one eighth-grade student.
May 10: Park View music concert
The Park View Elementary fourth grade state fair and music concert is at 2:45 p.m. on Friday, May 10, in the Park View large gym.
May 16: Westfield music concert
The Westfield Elementary fourth grade state fair and music concert is at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, in the Westfield large gym.
May 20: Band concert at Glenbard South
Band students from fifth through eighth grades will perform at 7 p.m. Monday, May 20, in the auditorium at Glenbard South High School, 23W200 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn. The concert will feature the fifth grade beginning band, sixth grade concert band, and 7/8th grade symphonic band.
The fifth-grade band will perform “River's Bend March” by Bruce Pearson, “Chaos Mountain” by Michael Oare, and “Attack of the Garden Gnomes” by Timothy Loest.
The sixth grade concert band will perform “Carpathia” by William Owens, “Chorale Prelude” by Anne McGinty, and the “William Tell Overture” arranged by Anne McGinty.
The 7/8th Symphonic Band will perform “Whirlwind” by Jodie Blackshaw, “Sun Cycles” by Brian Balmages, and music from the movie “How to Train Your Dragon” arranged by Sean O'Loughlin.
May 22: Arbor View music concert
The Arbor View Elementary fourth grade state fair and music concert is at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22.
May 24: Briar Glen concert
The Briar Glen Elementary fourth grade state fair and music concert is at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 24.
