The Glen Crest Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team is DuPage Metro Valley Association Conference regular-season champions after finishing the season with just one conference loss. The girls team finished 10-1 in conference, highlighted by a dramatic victory against co-champions Herrick Middle School.
“They’re the nicest group of girls,” said Glen Crest head coach Danny Sheridan. “They work hard. They’re a close-knit group and really fun.”
The Spartans only conference loss this season came February 7 against Herrick Middle School in Downers Grove. Herrick had also beat Glen Crest three times during seventh grade.
Going into the February 26 re-match, the Spartans knew the game would be critical for their chances of winning the conference title. The game was close throughout. With Glen Crest ahead 25-23, Herrick had two shots to win or tie at the end of the game.
“The last eight seconds felt like they took eight minutes. The clock would just not go to zero,” Sheridan said. “It was a great game. The spirit of the girls on the bench was awesome; they were cheering from beginning to end.”
The Spartans finished the season with wins at O’Neil and Marquardt to close out the regular season. The conference tournament starts Thursday and continues next week.
The Glen Crest team is: Abby Bergmann, Michela Coluzzi, Zoey Conn, Bryde Cronin, Adriana Denwood, Hailey Filburn, Lizbeth Hernandez, Sophia Hoderman, Amelia Lake, Kara Lange, Cammy Kucaba, Kayla Milano, Brynn Robbins, Maggie Schmidt, and Rachel Torres. Arianna Mora was the team’s assistant coach.
