Seventh-, eighth-grade girls basketball teams earn conference titles
It was a successful season for Glen Crest girls basketball as both the seventh- and eighth-grade teams earned regular season and conference-tournament championships.
The eighth-grade team won the conference tournament championship game 30-22 over Herrick Middle School on Thursday, March 10. The teams were tied at halftime, but Jamie Mizwicki’s four three-pointers in the third quarter helped the Spartans pull away.
The eighth-grade team finished the season 15-0 overall and 12-0 in conference games.
Head coach Danny Sheridan said that after the undefeated regular season that featured many close games, there was pressure going into the tournament. The stands were packed for the championship game.
“That was definitely some pressure but they stepped up to it,” Sheridan said. “You couldn’t have scripted any better finish for the girls to end their eighth-grade season.”
The seventh-grade girls entered the conference tournament as co-regular season champions. They also beat Herrick in the conference tournament championship game on Thursday. The team finished the year 11-2, with their only losses both coming by five points.
Jayne LaBelle is the coach for the seventh-grade team.
Eighth-grade team members were: Abby Baygood, Kate Bruhl, Emma Briggs, Olivia Cernauske, Teagan Cloutier, Genevieve Corbin, Jillian DeMayo, Gabia Judikas, Kylie LaBarbera, Anesa Maloku, Kylie Maline, Jamie Mizwicki, and Molly Purse.
