December 13-17 ‘Penny Wars’ fundraiser will help students who have housing instability

Looking to get rid of that spare change and help students who do not have steady housing situations? Students can bring donations to school during the week of December 13 through 17 to participate in a ‘Penny Wars’ competition that will help CCSD 89 students who have housing instability.

The district’s two Student Board Members, Jillian DeMayo and Kavya Uppal, have organized the fundraising competition and created a video explaining the fundraiser here:

Throughout the week, any silver coins or dollars that students put in their team’s jar will add points. Any pennies they put in the other team’s jars will subtract points.

At Glen Crest, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades will compete against each other. At the elementary schools, the groups will be kindergarten/first grade vs. second/third grade vs. fourth/fifth grade. Students can bring in donations through Friday, December 17. The grade level with the most points will earn a popsicle party after winter break.

Donations from all five schools will be collected to support CCSD 89 families that do not have a stable housing situation, including students who are homeless or do not have a consistent home address. The gift cards will help the students select clothes and school supplies.
