DuPage Health Department to offer free dental exams at CCSD 89 schools
The DuPage County Health Department will be providing free dental exams and cleanings to any CCSD 89 student who brings in a signed consent form. Qualified students can receive a cleaning, fluoride treatment, and sealants.
The consent forms can be found here: Dental Consent Form En Espanol
Dentists will be available to conduct exams and cleaning on the following dates:
- October 22: Westfield Elementary
- October 24: Arbor View Elementary
- October 28: Briar Glen Elementary
- October 30: Glen Crest Middle School
- November 1: Park View Elementary
The screenings will fulfill the state’s mandated oral-health exam requirement for kindergarten-, second-, and sixth-grade students. A letter will be sent home with the results of the dental exam and what services were done. Students with significant financial needs can have extensive treatment, as needed.
Each child will also receive a free toothbrush.
Last year, 322 CCSD 89 students were screened, and 131 children received cleanings. In total, dentists found 685 teeth that had cavities or decay. CCSD 89 students received $24,585 worth of dental services at no cost.
According to the Surgeon General, tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease – five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. The Surgeon General estimates that 51 million hours of school time are lost each year due to dental-related illnesses.
