Community invited to cheer on athletes at May 5 Special Olympics track meet
Glen Crest Middle School students Kymora Davis and Lexi Koenig will be competing in the Special Olympics regional track meet on Sunday, May 5, at Marmion Academy in Aurora. The meet will begin with a parade and opening ceremonies at 9 a.m.
Kymora and Lexi, who are both in eighth grade, will compete in the softball throw at 10:45 a.m. Kymora will then compete in the tennis ball throw at noon and Lexi will compete in the 50-meter run at 2:20 p.m.
"I want both girls to have a really great all-around experience," said Nicole Cannizzo, the Glen Crest literacy teacher and Special Olympics track coach. "I hope participating in the CCSD 89 Special Olympics their eighth grade year will be a fun and exciting memory that they will never forget."
Community members are welcome to cheer on Kymora and Lexi at the meet. Visitors can stop by the Glen Crest canopy, where there will be hourly activities including bubbles, hula hoops, fruit-eating and a beach ball toss to keep the day energizing and fun-filled.
Glen Crest chose a superhero theme for the meet; Kymora will be competing in a Batman shirt and Lexi will be competing in Wonder Woman gear.
This is the second year of a full, year-round Special Olympics program in CCSD 89. The district started a Special Olympics track team during the 2016-17 school year, then added soccer and basketball.
CCSD 89 plans to run all three sports in the 2019-20 school year. Anyone who would like to know more about participating in Special Olympics can contact Westfield teacher Paige Martino, the Special Olympics athletic director, at pmartino@ccsd89.org or (630) 858-2770, extension 3378, or CCSD 89 Director of Student Services Gene Olsen at golsen@ccsd89.org or (630) 469-8900, extension 3515.
