Last day of 2023-24 school year will be morning attendance on May 31

The CCSD 89 Board of Education recently approved two changes to this year’s calendar: April 29 will now be a full day of student attendance and the last day of school for students will be a half-day on Friday, May 31.

The updated calendar can be viewed here: www.ccsd89.org/2324calendar

Monday, April 29, was scheduled to be a School Improvement Day with no students in attendance. Monday, April 29, will now be a regular full day of attendance day for all students. (Any students who cannot attend due to previously scheduled events will have an excused absence.)

That change will move the last day of the 2023-24 school year for students to Friday, May 31. May 31 will be a half day for students with morning attendance. Student dismissal on the half-day will be at 11:15 a.m. for Glen Crest Middle School and 11:50 a.m. for elementary schools.

Monday, June 3, will be a School Improvement Day for all CCSD 89 staff.

Weather-related cancellations earlier this school year required the district to use three emergency days, which would have moved the last day to June 3. This raised concerns about the district’s construction schedule and student attendance.

CCSD 89 superintendent Doug Eccarius suggested moving the School Improvement Day from April 29 to June 3 so more students will be in attendance on the last day of school and to allow the district’s summer construction to begin earlier.

Although all schools were able to open on time for the 2023-24 school year, construction continued through the last day of summer break. This year, there are already nine less days available for summer construction. Moving the last day to May 31 preserves as many construction days as possible.
