Donate blood May 2 at Glen Crest, get free Colonial Café sundae
You can help someone in need and get a sweet treat by donating blood at Glen Crest Middle School on May 2. Anyone who donates between 2 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, will receive a $10 Colonial Café gift certificate.
The blood drive will be in the cafeteria of the school at 725 Sheehan Avenue, Glen Ellyn. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are appreciated. You can schedule a time at: https://bit.ly/2vw5749 The goal is to collect 20 pints of blood.
Blood donation is a simple four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation, and refreshments. The actual blood donation takes about 10 to 12 minutes. The entire process, from arrival to exit, takes about an hour.
The blood drive is open to anyone in the community. A photo ID is required to donate. It is recommended that a donor eat something within the four hours prior to donation.
In order to donate, you need to be at least 17 years old and in good health. You must weigh at least 110 pounds and have not donated blood for at least eight weeks. To determine if you are eligible to donate, contact Heartland Blood Centers at (800) 786-4483.
According to Heartland Blood Centers, although almost 40 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, less than 10 percent donate each year, which is why there are blood shortages.
Heartland Blood Centers provide blood to hospitals across the country. With more local permanent blood centers closing, Glen Crest Middle School has become a regular host site for Heartland drives. Glen Crest will also host a blood drive on August 29.
