Board approves three-year contract for teaching staff
The Board of Education and the Community Consolidated School District 89 Teachers’ Association have reached and ratified the terms of a three-year collective bargaining agreement that will last through the 2024-25 school year.
At the June 20, 2022, Board of Education meeting, the Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the agreement, which had previously been ratified by Association members. Bargaining teams for the Board and the Association worked together since December with the shared goal of reaching an agreement before the start of the 2022-2023 school year.
“The Board is excited to reach an agreement that is in the best interest of our students, staff, and taxpayers,” said CCSD 89 Board President Haydee Núñez. “This agreement recognizes the excellent work done by the teachers under the very challenging circumstances of the past several years. The Board appreciates the diligent, collaborative work done by the members of the Association and CCSD 89 staff to reach a new agreement in a timely manner.”
The new agreement includes an increase in the duration of the workday for teachers, allowing more time for professional development, staff meetings, grade-level problem-solving, department meetings, and teacher-led professional collaboration focused on student improvement and data. Also, the agreement continues to tie teacher compensation to the Consumer Price Index.
“Coming together on the issues that are so important to our employees and their families provides stability for students, for staff, and for the district,” said CCSD 89 Superintendent Dr. Emily Tammaru.
“The Association and the Board have a strong history of working together to reach an agreement that increases the district’s ability to attract and retain high-quality teachers who are key to maintaining the district’s educational excellence,” said Education Association Co-President Tracy Dietel. “Our members deserve to be fairly compensated for the important and difficult work they do on behalf of the students and staff of the district, and I believe this agreement does just that.”
