When residents of Community Consolidated School District 89 go to vote, they will be asked whether they want to approve bonds that would be used to complete essential infrastructure and safety projects at all five CCSD 89 schools while also reducing taxes.
Because of the work of the buildings and grounds team and the Board’s conservative fiscal approach, the district finds itself in a unique situation: residents have the opportunity to vote on a referendum that would protect the community’s investment in their schools while also lowering their tax rate.
The district recently paid off a set of bonds that were issued in 2008. The Board decided not to renew that first set of bonds, so that means the spring taxes for the average homeowner in CCSD 89 were reduced by $239 each year. That reduction is locked in.
The referendum asks whether to renew a second set of bonds. If the referendum is approved, it will lower the taxes on the average homeowner by an additional $4, for a total reduction of $243 per year.
Voting ‘yes’ on this question would be voting to support the referendum and issue the bonds. Voting ‘no’ on the referendum would be voting against the referendum.
The bonds would allow the district to complete the majority of the work over two summers (2023 and 2024). If the bonds are not approved, the projects would still need to be completed, but the work would be spread out over 20 years. During those two decades, there would be additional costs for maintenance and repairs, as well as potential system failures.
