CCSD 89 increases pay rates for substitute teachers

In an effort to alleviate ongoing substitute shortages and remain comparable with surrounding districts, Community Consolidated School District 89 has increased the pay rate for substitute teachers.

The new substitute rates are:

  • Daily substitute: $120 per day, with an increase to $135 after 15 days of subbing in CCSD 89
  • Retiree substitute: $125 per day, with an increase to $135 after 15 days of subbing in CCSD 89
  • Long-term substitute: $140 per day after 20 consecutive days subbing for the same teacher or covering a leave of absence
  • Paraprofessional substitute: $90 per day

Prior to the pandemic, CCSD 89 had a substitute teacher fill rate between 80 and 100 percent daily. At times this school year, the fill rates have dipped as low as 41 percent. This mirrors substitute shortages across the state. When a substitute position is not filled, other staff members (speech pathologists, psychologists, principals) are called in to substitute.

CCSD 89 last raised substitute pay rates in the 2014-15 school year. At the time, the district was comparable to nearby districts at $105 per day. An evaluation this year showed that surrounding districts averaged $120 per day, which will be the new CCSD 89 rate.

You can substitute if you have a four-year degree or a substitute teacher license. On November 9, the DuPage County Regional Office of Education is holding an online training at 5 p.m. as well as an informational meeting at 9 a.m. with information about how to become a substitute teacher.  Learn more at www.ccsd89.org/substitute
