Arbor View celebrates with kites during “Festival of Uttarayn”
During the week of January 13 through 17, the halls of Arbor View Elementary were filled with kites, as students learned about and celebrated the “Festival of Uttarayn”.
The festival is a celebration from Gujurat, India’s western-most state. The festival marks the day when winter turns to summer on the Indian calendar. The festival signals that the sun is back and harvest season is near.
Many Gujurat cities organize kite competitions between residents. Uttarayan is such a huge celebration that it has become a public holiday in the eastern and western parts of India.
During the week, students made and decorated kites. They learned more about the festival from Arbor View students who celebrate the tradition. They even got to try flying some kites!
