Glen Crest students enjoy visit from helicopter, MRAP
On September 4, 2019, Glen Crest students had the opportunity to be part of a unique educational experience when an Illinois Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopter and Navistar MRAP vehicle visited the school.
At about 10 a.m. on September 4, the helicopter landed on the sports fields east of the middle school building. At about the same time, a MaxxPro Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) military vehicle pulled into the school’s parking lot.
Students were able to step inside the helicopter and the MRAP vehicle. They asked crew members lots of questions about the helicopter and the MRAP.
Social studies and science teachers incorporated lessons on the history and physics of the helicopter and MRAP into classes throughout the week. The helicopter and MRAP both left the campus around 2 p.m. the same day.

Special thank you to:
- The Illinois Army National Guard – especially Glen Crest dad Sgt. First Class Luke Oleksak – who provided the helicopter at no cost to the district.
- Glen Crest dad Rene Gresham and Amy McCaskill, both of Navistar, who explained the mechanics and use of the MRAP vehicle.
- Retired Sgt. Chris Kunder of the Army Airborne Infantry, who talked to students about his experiences using the Blackhawk and an MRAP.
- The Glen Ellyn police and fire departments for providing support throughout the day.
