Students will have unique learning opportunity when helicopter lands at Glen Crest on Wednesday, September 4
A letter from Glen Crest Principal Kim Price:
I wanted to let you know about an exciting experience our students will have the opportunity to be a part of on Wednesday.
At approximately 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, an Illinois Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopter will be landing on the sports fields east of our school. The helicopter will be at Glen Crest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., then it will fly back to southern Illinois. During the same time, a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) military vehicle will be in the school’s parking lot.
Students will have the chance to step into the helicopter and the MRAP vehicle, which will both be disabled. (For safety, no students will be outside when the helicopter is landing or taking off.) Personnel will be on hand to answer questions about the helicopter and MRAP.
Social studies and science teachers have incorporated lessons on the history and physics of the helicopter into our curriculum. There will be no military recruitment during the visit. The helicopter and MRAP vehicle will be on our campus until around 2 p.m.
Because the school day will continue as scheduled while the helicopter and MRAP are on campus, this event is not open to the public. Glen Ellyn police officers will be in the area to help monitor any traffic concerns. Thanks to the support of two Glen Crest parents that made this opportunity possible, the helicopter and MRAP vehicle are being provided at no cost!
I’d like to thank Assistant Principal John Batiste for helping arrange this visit and the Glen Crest parent partners, Luke Oleksak and Rene and Leslie Gresham, who are creating this opportunity. Be sure to ask your students what they learned during this unique experience!
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Kim Price
