COVID-19 rules and guidelines in CCSD 89 for 2021-22
All CCSD 89 schools will open on Wednesday, August 18, for full-day, in-person learning five days a week, and masks will be required for all students, staff, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status.
This email will give more information about which practices will remain in place during the 2021-22 school year and which have changed.
This chart summarizes most of the COVID-19 protocols in an easy-to-read format.
One of the main factors in requiring masks for the 2021-22 school year is the need to keep students in school. CCSD 89 will continue to work with the school nurses and the DuPage County Health Department to contact trace COVID-19 cases. Students who are positive for COVID-19 will still need to isolate for 10 days and have a negative COVID-19 test.
Vaccinated students who are not showing COVID-19 symptoms and were following mitigation practices will not have to quarantine when they are a close contact of someone who is positive for COVID-19. Glen Crest students can bring their vaccination card to the back-to-school events. Students who do not show proof of vaccination will follow the isolation and quarantine rules for unvaccinated students.
Unvaccinated students who are showing symptoms of COVID-19 will work with the school nurse to determine when they can return to school. The quarantine time may be reduced if all mitigation practices (masks, social distancing, etc.) were being followed.
The district will continue to monitor conditions and communicate any updates. If the recommendations or conditions in the district change significantly, the district could remove layers of mitigation. The CDC recommends removing one layer at a time and gauging the impact of that change before taking additional steps.
COVID-19 protocols remaining in place for 2021-22
- Masks: Students should bring two masks to school each day. All students, regardless of vaccination status, should wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth while indoors at school.
- Masks on the bus: All students must wear a mask while riding the bus.
- Building sanitization: The district will continue to have increased air circulation in all buildings. The district will continue to have enhanced cleaning in the buildings, including the use of electrostatic sprayers, frequent cleaning of high-touch areas, and hand-sanitizer stations in all classrooms.
- Social distancing: Students should continue to socially distance as much as possible during the day. The district will strive to have most desks at least three feet apart. Because students are wearing masks, they will be able to do more partner and small-group work.
- Masks optional outdoors: Students will have the option to remove their masks when they are outside for lunch, recess, PE, or breaks.
- School entrance: Students will wait outside the school for the bell to ring. Students will enter at assigned doors and proceed straight to their classroom. Principals will communicate pick-up and drop-off procedures for each school.
- Isolation: Students who are positive for COVID-19 should stay home from school for 10 days and have a negative COVID-19 test.
- Symptom check: Families should still check their child for COVID-19 symptoms each day before school. Students who are symptomatic should stay home and follow isolation guidelines. The school nurse can help navigate these decisions.
- Accommodations: School teams are prepared to help students deal with any issues arising from mask anxiety or accommodations needed for speech therapies.
Changes for 2021-22 school year
- Remote learning: Remote learning will only be available to students who have certification from their physician that they require a medical exemption. Staff will not be teaching in-person and remote students simultaneously. If you believe your student will meet remote learning requirements, please contact Director of Student Services Katie Kreller.
- Quarantine: Students who are vaccinated and not symptomatic will not have to quarantine after being a close contact of a COVID-19-positive person. Students who have not completed the COVID-19 vaccination, but who are masked during a close contact, may be able to remain in school as long as they test negative for COVID-19.
- Self-certification tickets: Students will not be required to present a self-certification ticket at school each day. However, parents are expected to check their student for COVID-19 symptoms prior to sending them to school.
- Lunch and recess: Lunch and recess will take place at school. Students will be socially distanced to the greatest extent possible.
- Sports and clubs: Extracurricular activities will return for the 2021-22 school year. Students participating in indoor sports may need to participate in saliva screening.
- Busing: Students will not have assigned seats on the bus, but students are encouraged to sit with any siblings who are on the same route.
- Band and chorus: Band, orchestra, and chorus will take place at school. Unvaccinated students participating in some of these activities may need to participate in saliva screening.
- Saliva testing: The district will not be doing school-wide or classroom saliva surveillance testing. However, some students participating in specific activities (such as indoor sports) will be participating in surveillance screening.
