Curriculum and Instruction

The curriculum in Community Consolidated School District 89 is modeled after the Illinois Learning Standards

District 89 teachers also use differentiation strategies in their classrooms in an effort to address the unique educational needs of each student.

One innovative tool that is used in many District 89 classrooms is the Smartboard Interactive Whiteboard. Smartboard technology provides for enhanced teaching and learning and and its use exemplifies District 89's committment to providing students with the tools they need to become successful learners in a digital environment.

In addition to classroom technology, District 89 has many programs that address the needs of individual learners.  To meet the needs of all students, the following programs are available to those who qualify:

English Lanuguage Learner (ELL) - a program available to students from families of non-English speaking backgrounds and whose level of English proficiency significantly interferes with their academic performance. Teachers and/or aides provide ELL services with small group and computer-assisted instruction.

Reading Recovery ® - an early intervention program for first grade students only, designed to promote success of beginning readers. Individually planned lessons, delivered 1:1 five days a week, lasting 30 minutes a day for sixteen to twenty weeks.

Special Education - services are provided for students who qualify according to state criteria for specified programs or services. Services may include occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech/language therapy as well as programs designed for students with learning disabilities and behavioral disorders.

Challenge Program - a program for students in grades 2 through 5 who are gifted in their intellectual ability, academic development, and creative thinking. This instruction is in addition to the standard classroom curriculum and is provided by a teacher who is specially trained in gifted education. Emphasis is placed on developing higher-level critical and creative thinking.
